Texas Holdem
i was the big blind and raised 17 pre flop i had pocket 10's. I got three callers; the flop 10;9;6 two spades. First to act checks to me I make it 40 i get one call and the first to act reraises 40 + 75. I call and the guy be hind me moves all in for 15 more we both call. The turn is a 2; first to act goes all in for 480, I have 300 left i take a long time and then i fold. He shows pocket 6's and another 2 hits the river, I would have won; where was my mistake? The first to act was playing extremly tight as was I. I know I had the second nutts but I thought with his push he flopped the straight. I did have one card to go, should i have popped it when he put the 75 on top of the 40?

Can someone please explain why there are times a player goes all in, and even though they have nothing, they are still awarded some of their chips back. Im not talking about side pots, because I understand those. I am speaking of times when someone goes all in, doesn't even have a pair, or a high card, and a legitimate hand wins. I see players get part of their chips back, even though there were other higher hands showing.

I've only been playing for a few months, I've read some books, blogs, and internet advice columns. I was recently playing a $1/2 NL Hold 'em cash game. I busted this guy and when I did, he started whining about getting "sucked out". But, based on some of the advice columns and books I read, I thought I played the hand pretty well. But I'm not sure. I had AQo on the button. I raised pre-flop and got called by the big blind. I'd been sitting there about two hours watching the big blind - he was playing very loose, he would limp in, and he would bet out if he got any piece of the flop. So, the flop came Q 8 2 rainbow and he bet about half the pot. I called. The turn was a rag and he went all in. I had him covered so I called. He flipped over Q4o and I won. He started whining about getting sucked out, which I think means he thought he got beat by a poorly played hand.
My pre-flop thinking was, I'm in position, I have a good hand (AQo) so I should raise. After I got called, I wasn't sure what he had because he calls with anything. When the flop came, I figured if he had any piece of it, he would bet, he did and he did. I figured he had a Queen or was trying to represent that he did. Obviously, he couldn't beat my kicker and there were no 4 straight or 4 flush draws. I was pretty sure I was ahead. I thought if I re-raised, he may fold if he's got a weak kicker. If I only called, he may try to bet again on the turn. He would call a re-raise if he had a strong kicker, but it wasn't beating mine. I thought if I just called, he'd think he was fine with his top pair, weak kicker - he did, and on the turn, he went all in and I broke him.
I've gotten to the point where I feel better about how I'm playing - I'm no longer totally clueless, I'm starting to understand things more, but still feel I have a very long way to go. I was just looking for some help, am I on the right track here? Did I play this right considering my opponent? If not, what should I have done?
I read that you should bet the flop with top pair, top kicker, but I also read that it's good to slow play a loose player like this. Which one would have been better in this situation?
Thanks

After Flop of Q 8 5 rainbow, seat 1 raises, seat 2 re-raises. Seat 1 pushes all in. Dealer sees seat 2 turn over JJ and did not hear call of All-in. Dealer mucked flop and then pushed chips to seat 1 who had turned over AA. Seat 2 then announces he had called. Dealer brings what remembered from the muck. Deck had not been mucked, ran turn card and river with no Jack or straight or flush draws.
Seat 2 said pot should have been chopped....

Player 1 had Q 7
Player 2 had Q 10
the flop was 4 5 6 8 2
Player 1 called Q high
Player 2 called Q high
Player 1 failed to see the straight and called his hand as the highest card
Therefore who wins the hand? does he still win despite calling the wrong hand?
