Busy Day at the 2010 World Series of Poker Yesterday

The 2010 World Series of Poker (WSOP) is well underway and yesterday provided plenty of excitement with five events including two new events taking place in both the Amazon and Grand Pavilion poker rooms.

Event #13 a $1,000 No Limit Hold’em event wrapped up with Steven Gee claiming his first bracelet. The Sacramento native outlasted a number of professional players including David Baker and Jared Hamby to claim his title. In the final hand of the match Gee beat out runner up Matt Vance with a pair of Aces on the flop.

In Event #16 a $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em / Six Handed match budding young professional Carter Phillips also snatched up his first ever WSOP bracelet. At 21 this is the first year that Phillips has been eligible to compete at the WSOP and it was the first WSOP event he has ever faced off in.

Both players will be presented with their bracelets in a special bracelet ceremony this afternoon. This is the first year that a special ceremony will be held for each event and the first year that every event features a unique bracelet design.

Day 2 of Event #17, a $5,000 No Limit Hold’em event, saw the competition heat up. While some tables kept it light and friendly others got downright nasty with Phil Hellmuth appearing to lose his temper. Not only did the poker legend verbally assault other players at the table but when he was eliminated by David Benefield he went on a profanity laced tirade that left many players holding their tongues. “Eventually, he’s going to go after the wrong guy,” said one player who wished to remain anonymous. “He can get away with that kind of talk to some people, but if he ever says it to me I’m going to take care of business.”

On a lighter note Event #18 $2,000 Limit Hold’em kicked things off. 476 players turned out for the event creating a prize pool of nearly a million dollars. Moving at a fast pace 367 players were eliminated during the first day of competition leaving players only 64 away from the money bubble. The biggest news to come out of this event had more to do with the ventilation system then it did with the actual cards. Players were huddled in their warmest clothing for the first eight hours of play as the AC system worked the kinks out.

Finally the $10,000 2-7 Draw Lowball Championship (Event #19) began with a field that was absolutely loaded to the brim with big names. Phil Ivey, Chris Ferguson, Mike Matusow, Tom “durrrr” Dwan and Daniel Negreanu were just a few of the players that made up the $949,400 prize pool. The atmosphere of the competition was wild with side bets flying left and right before the first card was even laid on the felt.

Tony G who lost a bet to Dwan was forced to do push-ups along-side the table after he was eliminated and seven time WSOP bracelet winner Billy Baxter could be seen moving up and down his table conversing with players. More like a party then a tournament event the 2-7 Draw Lowball Championship, was a blast to watch and it appeared that everyone was in high spirits. Only about a fourth of the playing field was eliminated. Everyone else will return tomorrow for Day 2.

The WSOP continues now through July 17th. Stay tuned for more news and updates.
