Macau Poker Cup Turns Out to Be a Big Hit
PokerStars Macau is being hailed as a rousing success. The 5-day tournament series attracted more than 1,000 players across seven events and set three record-breaking prize pools with several events paying out in the 4-figures for the first time in the stop’s history.
A total of 314 players turned out for the Red Dragon Main Event creating a HKD $2,859,912 prize pool. It was the second largest pool in the event’s history and at the start of the final it appeared that local hero Ginger Keong would be destined to walk away with the HKD $643,000 first-place prize.
At one point Keong owned over half the chips in play, but a few bad hands and well Pocket Aces proved to be his demise as Japan’s James McCarty moved into heads-up play with a 7-1 chip advantage.
“I come here (to PokerStars Macau) every couple months and specifically like the deep tournament structure.” said 27-year McCarty. “I feel I played well, but also got lucky at the right time.”
Even the best pros will tell you sometimes that’s exactly what it all comes down to, the luck of the draw. To those fans of Keong out there who feel they’ve been cheated we say better luck next year.
Congratulations to McCartney and to PokerStars for all of their success. We look forward to seeing what next year has to offer.
