New Poker Show on Fox

It’s a known fact that poker shows draw in ratings. The World Series of Poker on ESPN is doing fantastic – so fantastic in fact that the network has recently signed an agreement with Harrah’s to continue airing its coverage for the next seven years. At the moment, a total of almost 82 million people in the US are watching the WSOP each year. It’s a smart move for ESPN to continue airing the tournament because, clearly, people love watching poker.

So why has NBC’s Saturday night poker show, Face the Ace, done so poorly? The Full Tilt show has barely drawn in a million viewers for each episode. If people like poker so much, why has this show been such a flop?

Poker Stars is hoping it’s just a fluke because in the wake of Face the Ace’s failure, they’re hoping their new show is a success. The PokerStars.net Million Dollar Challenge is the next poker show to hit airwaves. According to Pokerati, the show brings online poker players to the big screen through various freerolls.

“Finish in the top 10 in one of several freerolls held over the next few months on PokerStars.net, then submit a two-minute audition tape with two of your buddies (who also will travel with the winner to the taping to offer support), and PokerStars.net will select 21 winning entries to appear on one of 4 programs on Fox which are also non-NFL doubleheader days: October 11 and 18, November 22, December 13 with the grand final being shown on December 27 at 4pm.”

PokerStars.net Million Dollar Challenge might not sound as exciting as Face the Ace, the show where players compete against pros, but it does sound like a great opportunity for online poker players. Let’s hope Fox has the same success ESPN is having.
