Playing Good Poker: The Winning Emotions

Learning how to gain control over emotions is one of the most significant steps to becoming a great poker player. The most important thing of all is to try to block out the wrong emotions and focus on having the ones that will help you win. Emotions cause us to make mistakes if the wrong ones gain control.

Patience is probably the most important emotion of them all. If you feel yourself losing patience, it is time to take a break. When a poker player becomes impatient, they start to make empty bets in the hopes that they will win the pot.

Are you a courageous poker player? That is one of the most important qualities in a high stakes poker game. Being courageous doesn't mean staying in a pot after investing in it, even if there isn't any hope. In that case, don’t hesitate to fold if it isn’t possible to win. Being courageous means that when you do have that great hand, don't be afraid to take risks. Doyle Brunson once said, “Timid players don’t win in high stakes poker” and he was right.

Vigilance is the key to successful poker. Every action you take should be made with an attentive mind. Mastering this emotion is crucial. Without it, the wrong decisions can easily be made. Be aware of your opponents at all times and always make sure that the wrong emotions are not leading you to make bad choices. If you ever feel that you are not in the right state of mind, always take a step back and find the root of your problems. Instead of being angry or upset, learn from your mistakes and use them to improve your game. Never allow yourself to play while frustrated; always play with a positive attitude. Learning how to keep your emotions out of the game will enable you to make the right choices and will allow you to become a poker pro.
