Satellite Poker Tournament Strategy

 

The most important thing to understand is that instant gratification is not what is important. Thinking in the long term will benefit you exponentially, rather than thinking about the here and now. This means that you must be able to fork out more money in order to continue in the satellite and reach your goal of making the payout structure. 

 

With so much money on the line, you will be forced to play at the top of your game and play very carefully. Only play hands that you know will win. The last thing you want is to be eliminated from the competition. Don’t take any risks. Just sit back and watch as your opponents dwindle. Don’t be the one to mess up. Your opponents will take each other out and you will still be standing.

 

If you get dealt a hand that is a guaranteed win, don't be afraid to give it all you’ve got. Intimidate the other players and be aggressive. That way your opponents will know that you are a force to be reckoned with and fear will be instilled in them making the chances of them calling a bluff less likely. This is a great way to build up your chip count in the beginning and give you the reputation you’ll need later in the game. 

 

Another important thing to keep in mind is the play style of each of your opponents. Figure out how to outplay each of those styles and use those skills against them in the game. Don’t get tunnel vision and the only thing you see is what’s in your hand. An enormous part of any poker game is to become more attentive to your opponents. 

 

Always remember that satellites are a great learning experience and can help improve your game tremendously. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t make the payout structure. Take the lessons you’ve learned and use them to win the next one. Failure is just a pathway to success.
