James Mitchell Claims the 2010 Irish Open Title

Englishman James Mitchell was crowned champion of the PaddyPowerPoker.com Irish Open 2010. The 20-year-old player beat out a playing field of 707 players making it one of the most well attended events on the European poker calendar.

The competition was steep and included such big names as Dan Harrington, Brian Townsend, Kara Scott, Christer Johansson, Neil Channing and Paul Carr. The €600,000 win is Mitchell’s first major win and hopefully the start of a long career. He has come close to scoring a title or two in the past. He was runner-up last year at the World Heads-Up Championships.

Going into the final table all eyes had been on Finnish star, Santeri Valikoski who had a large chip lead going into the final match. Valikoski hit a bit of a speed bump along the way and despite early signs of success ended up in third place.

Mitchell on the other hand came into the final match in third place and seemed destined for the chopping block after suffering an early setback that resulted in him losing half of his stack early on. It was almost by pure luck that Mitchell found himself the beneficiary of several large pots that allowed him to build up his bankroll enough to make it to the heads up match.

It all came down to the final hand. Mitchell went all-in with A-6 against Paul Carr’s pocket queens. With an ace on the river Mitchell was in command. Carr tried to bluff with Q-5 against the A-8 of Mitchell on a JJ8 flop, Mitchell called and no queen on the turn or river handed him the title and the €600,000 first prize.

The Final Table Results were as Follows:
1st James Mitchell — €600,000
2nd Paul Carr — €312,600
3rd Santeri Valikoski — €205,200
4th Rob Sherwood — €163,300
5th Ben Roberts — €130,600
6th Edmund Sweeney — €100,800
7th Declan Connolly — €75,000
8th Peter Murphy — €56,300
