Jason Mercier Triumphs at the NAPT Mohegan Sun $25k Highroller Event

Jason Mercier took out the competition at the final table of the PokerStars.net North American Poker Tour Mohegan Sun $25,000 High Roller Bounty Shootout event. The Team PokerStars Pro outlasted and outplayed some of the best of the best that included Faraz Jaka, NAPT Venetian Main Event runner-up Sam Stein and season vet Matt Glantz.

Highlighting the big money tournament was an epic five hour heads-up duel between Mercier and Stein which saw multiple lead changes and many near finishes. Mercier himself seemed to have survived three all-ins by pure luck causing a member of the audience to yell, “You got nine lives Jason.”

“The heads-up battle was pretty intense,” Mercier said. “He whittled me down to less than 100k, but I got it with King-Ten and hit a three-outer on the river. Sam played really well heads-up, and all throughout the final table.”

In the final hand of the match Mercier moved in on the button and Stein called with a 9H 3H. Mercier tabled TS 6C and the board revealed KC 4D 8D KS 2C. Mercier got the high card and the rest is history.

This is the second time in a row that Stein has finished second at NAPT events. For some reason he just hasn’t been able to take it all the way. “It’s a little disappointing, but this stings a little less,” Stein recently told reporters. “I feel like I played really well, no real regrets. Nothing I would take back. I feel like I was on point and had a pretty good feel for how he was playing.”

In contrast to the first day of action, Day 2 saw players slowing down, as they measured their every move. It was nearly three hours before a single player was eliminated as they all brought on their best game. It’s doubtful that any of the competitors went home with a small on their face though. All but one of the finalist earned $60,000 in bounty before even hitting the final table.

Final Payouts for the NAPT Mohegan Sun $25,000 High Roller Bounty Shootout was as follows:

  1. Jason Mercier - $445,000
  2. Sam Stein - $75,000
  3. Faraz Jaka - $80,000
  4. Matt Glantz - $70,000
  5. Shawn Buchanan - $80,000
  6. Luis Vasquez - $70,000
