US Online Poker Crackdown Seems to Have a Positive Effect on World Series of Poker Attendance

The recent crackdown on internet poker has not had the negative effect on the World Series of Poker (WSOP) that many suspected it would, in fact it appears to have had quite the opposite effect.

The 42nd annual WSOP is now on pace to set a new attendance record. During the first 30 events WSOP officials have seen an 11.7% increase in total entrants from the same stage last year and total prize money is up over 8.6%. The WSOP said Tuesday that its participation and prize pools could very well surpass last year's record totals of 72,966 participants and more than $187.1 million in prize money.

"We are humbled once again by the incredible turnout from players all over the world," said Ty Stewart, WSOP executive director. "It has been a record-setting summer thus far in 2011 and we are confident it will continue through the duration of the tournament."
 
Even if the Main Event does not bring in the numbers needed to beat the total attendance record the WSOP has already set at least one new record. Last Friday, the WSOP had 5,946 players seated for various tournaments which is the largest numbers of players to ever compete in a single day in the history of live, casino poker.
