WPT World Poker Classic Championship Goes to Jake Cody

Jake Cody took out the competition at the inaugural World Poker Tour London Poker Classic. The 22 year-old Brit faced some stiff competition at the £5,000 + £300 buy-in Main Event but he proved once again that he is a forced to be reckoned with, winning the title and earning a £273,783 payday.

“This is crazy – I am so happy to win my first WPT title,” he said shortly after the match. “It’s been an amazing year for me so far and to win a major tournament on UK soil is very special.”

Cody is now two thirds of the way to securing the triple crown of poker. He earned an EPT Deauville title in January and just needs to earn a World Series of Poker bracelet to complete one of the greatest accomplishments in a poker pro’s career.

The tournament’s sponsor, PartyPoker, breathed a sigh of relief at Cody’s win. If fourth place finisher Kristoffer Thorsson had won the title they would have been forced to pay out an additional $1 million in bonus money as part of a special promotion.

“I was totally aware there was huge pressure on Kristoffer because of the extra $1 million bonus,” said Cody who knocked out the online player. “I thought he did well and actually believe he was the best player at the table.”
