All in question

Can someone please explain why there are times a player goes all in, and even though they have nothing, they are still awarded some of their chips back. Im not talking about side pots, because I understand those. I am speaking of times when someone goes all in, doesn't even have a pair, or a high card, and a legitimate hand wins. I see players get part of their chips back, even though there were other higher hands showing.
