Poker Players Leave Early at WSOP

Although the 2009 World Series of Poker is still underway, some big names have left the competition.

On Saturday Chris Moneymaker and Doyle Brunson left the competition. Brunson stated, “WSOP 2009 is over for me. It’s disappointing, but also a sense of relief. Now back to the real world.”

Early on Sunday, Lacy Jones was among the first to leave. “Out. Set over set. So sick,” she bellowed before leaving. Evelyn Ng, another top female poker player, was also knocked out early, stating “I’m out in level 2. I played bad and deserved it. What’s wrong with me?” Later that day, the monumental Annie Duke also bowed out. The ESPN cameras had been watching her all day, waiting to see if something happened. “I’m out. I am now retiring to bed. Until next year,” she said before leaving.

Other notable players who left include Vicky Coren, Jeremiah Smith, Ralph Perry, David Steicke and David “The Dragon” Pham.

The biggest surprise, however, was an early elimination of Daniel Negreanu, who was vying for the honor of 2009 World Series of Poker Player of the Year.

Having flu-like symptoms, Negreanu left saying, “Out of the WSOP and don’t really care. So sick I just need a bed.”
