Amit Makhija

Name: Amit Makhija
Winnings to Date: $1,613,658Born in Brookfield, WI, Amit Makhija began playing poker while pursuing a degree in finance and economics at the University of Minnesota. Like most college students, Makhija didn't have much money so he competed in freeroll events and after earning $100 in prize money he slowly but surely worked his way up in the cash game circuit before turning his attention to tournament events.
In 2006, he took down his first major online tournament, the Super Wednesday tournament on Party Poker, for $20,000 and began playing for higher stakes. Over the next two years he became a regular final table finisher in major online events and in 2008 he decided that he was ready to put more of his focus on competing in live events. That year, he won an impressive $1,041,874 and cashed three times at the WSOP and twice on the WPT. Since then he has cashed in at least three events at every WSOP tournament he has attended and cashed at least once a year on the WPT. He has yet to win a major event but his consistent performances tell us it's only a matter of time.
Even though Makhija has found success on the live tournament circuit he continues to be a major force on the online poker scene. He continues to cash regularly in major online tournaments on PokerStars, Full Tilt, Bodog, and Absolute Poker, and as a member of the Brunson10 routinely takes part in cash games on DoylesRoom. Those who want to catch him in action should keep an eye out for Amak316.
