Chris Moneymaker

Name: Chris Moneymaker

Winnings to Date: $3,150,105

It’s pretty entertaining when a man with the last name “Moneymaker” makes a fortune while playing poker. That is how Chris Moneymaker became famous over night. The accountant from Tennessee became a millionaire at the 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event. This average Joe is responsible for the increased interest in poker in the years following his incredible win. This boost of the poker industry is known by poker players as the “moneymaker effect” making Chris Moneymaker a celebrity in the poker world.

Moneymaker started out as an average guy in life going to college at the University of Tennessee and earning a master’s degree in accounting. He had a pregnant wife and a career ahead of him. Little did he know his whole life would change dramatically in the near future. Just three months after becoming the champion of the 2003 WSOP, he became a father to a daughter named Ashley.
Chris had a love for gambling his whole life beginning with bridge with his grandmother and then to blackjack. Eventually Chris found online poker and began playing at Poker Stars at some of the multi-table tournaments. He began with $20 and $40 buy-in tournaments and soon realized he was doing pretty well. It was a $39 satellite that took Moneymaker to a seat at the 2003 World Series of Poker where he went on to win $2,500,000.
Chris Moneymaker is now a spokesperson for PokerStars and also plays regular games there. He also has done well in the World Poker Tour’s 2004 Shooting Stars Event where he placed second for a payday of $200,000. Moneymaker also wrote an autobiography in 2005 titled Moneymaker: How an Amateur Poker Player Turned $40 into $2.5 Million at the World Series of Poker.
