Doyle Brunson

Name: Doyle Brunson
Winnings to Date: $6,022,478Doyle Brunson, now 75, is commonly considered the Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan and Arnold Palmer of poker. Having a first hand in the invention of Texas Hold’em, he’s helped pave the way for a sport that’s played around the world. Brunson was the star of the Texas Rounders, the first of the high stakes hotel poker players, the winner of ten WSOP events and a best-selling author. He’s done it all.
Brunson learned early on how to make the best of a hand. Raised in Texas, he was a natural athlete who went to college on a sports scholarship. Right after being recruited for the NBA team the Minneapolis Lakers, he shattered his leg in an accident. His leg never did heal properly, so he was forced to earn wages in other ways. It was then that he took up poker. Due to his observant nature, he was especially good at reading faces. Sadly, in 1962, he was diagnosed with cancer and given only three months to live. Like many challenges, he embraced this and pulled through. Now, over 40 years later, he’s still playing and still winning.
In 1978, Brunson changed the game of poker with his book Super System, a complete guide to Texas Hold’em and other games of poker. The book remains to be called the Bible of poker, and is one of the top-selling poker books of all time. Brunson continued his success by publishing the follow up, Super System 2, which includes new games, new strategies and insight from some of the other biggest names in poker today.
Currently, Brunson hosts poker had his website, DoylesRoom.com, blogs, twitters and writes a syndicated poker column in the London Telegraph. He continues to play at the elite level and in 2005 he won his 10th WSOP bracelet. In 2006, Doyle Brunson was voted the #1 most influential force in the world of poker by BLUFF Magazine. At this time, he shows no sign of slowing down.
