Gavin Smith

Gavin Smith is a Canadian poker pro with a World Poker Tour title to his name and a slew of other tournament accomplishments. He was born in Guelph, Ontario on September 4, 1968 and learned to love card games growing up while playing cribbage and rummy with his father. As an adult, Smith worked a few jobs as a taxi driver and on a golf course. At the age of 26, he began playing poker with his co-workers to pass the time and soon realized he has a knack for the game. In 1996 he took a job as a poker dealer and two years later opened his own poker club.

The poker pro nicknamed “Birdguts” wasted no time making a name for himself after deciding to make a career out of the game in 1998. He made it obvious very quickly that he was a force to be reckoned with at the tables with two final table appearances at the World Poker Finals at Foxwoods. The following year Smith took down his first major tournament win at Foxwoods during the No Limit Hold’em event. Again in 2000 Smith claimed another Foxwoods title winning the 7 card Stud Hi/Lo 8 or Better tournament. He continued to prosper finishing in several final tables for the following few years.

In 2005, Smith achieved a new level of play with his most successful year of his career. At the Mirage Poker Showdown he took home two first place prizes and cashed in four World Series of Poker Tournaments as well as a third place finish at the Doyle Brunson North American Poker Championship amassing hundreds of thousands of dollars in winnings in the process. Gavin has participated and cashed in a multitude of tournaments since and has earned more during his career than most people see in a lifetime at a 9 to 5 job.

Smith keeps himself in good company with friends like Joe Sebok and Erick Lindgren backing him up. During his early poker days, Lindgren helped fund Smith’s bankroll. Gavin has been known to take up entertaining prop bets with fellow poker players including his friend Sebok. Smith has a tattoo on his right shoulder of a four leaf clover and the initials J.S. which he had to get after losing a prop bet to Sebok. Sebok has also lost prop bets to Smith where he had to do things like wear a Wonder Woman costume and tattoo Smith’s face on his body.
