Howard Lederer

Name: Howard Lederer

Winnings to Date: $6,093,953

Lederer moved to New York to pursue his passion for chess right after college. He soon discovered a poker game in the back room of his chess club and was immediately hooked. For two years, Lederer played poker nonstop. He played up to 80 hours a week and went home broke almost every night. To earn money, he’d run errands for the other players. After a while, he saw the error in his ways and started to slow down.

Lederer’s game improved when he started to play at the Mayfair Club in New York, a legendary bridge and backgammon club. With his fellow players, they were one of the first groups to experiment with No-Limit Hold’em when it was first introduced in New York City. They would play from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. and learn strategies from one another.

In the late 80’s Lederer started to work with his sister, Annie Duke, on her game. They both competed in the WSOP that year; she knocked him out in three events. In 1994, Duke and Lederer made poker history by being the first brother and sister duo to make it to the same final table at the WSOP.

In 1993, Lederer moved to Las Vegas in order to take his game to the next level. He concentrated on cash games mostly, and then started playing in the monthly WPT tournaments. As his game improved, he earned his first two Hall of Fame titles when he won the $2,500 No-Limit Deuce to Seven Draw event at the 1994 Hall of Fame Poker Classic. A year later he earned his second title by defending his title at the 1995 Hall of Fame Poker Classic.

Lederer won his first gold bracelet in the $5,000 Limit Omaha Hi/Lo event at the 2000 WSOP. A year later, he won his second in the $5,000 Deuce to Seven event at the 2001 WSOP. In November of 2002, he won his first WPT Championship title in Foxwoods. The next year Lederer won his second WPT Championship title in the $5,000 Limit Hold’em event on the Poker Million cruise. Just one month later, Lederer won the first of his three Bellagio titles in the $2,500 No-Limit Hold 'em event at the 2003 Bellagio Five-Star World Poker Classic. His second Bellagio win was in the $2,500 No-Limit Hold 'em event in April 2004. His third Bellagio title came 13 days later in the $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha event.

Nowadays, Lederer provides commentary and analysis on Full Tilt Poker under the name The Professor. He also runs a Poker Fantasy Camp for players to learn strategies and tricks of the trade.
