Hoyt Corkins

Name: Hoyt Corkins

Winnings to Date: $5,422,143

Hoyt Corkins is a soft spoken yet aggressive poker player who was born in Glenwood, Alabama. He began playing poker at the age of 19 after his father taught him how to play. He is known throughout the poker community as the Alabama Cowboy, referring to his cowboy hat which he always wears and for his cattle raising abilities back home in Alabama.
Corkins first appeared on the poker scene in 1992 when he won a World Series of Poker bracelet and $96,000 in the $5k Pot Limit Omaha event. He is also known for sporting ear plugs to tournaments in order to remain undistracted by the chatter at the table. After that win in 1992, Corkins left the felt to return his attention back home where he spent the next 11 years raising cattle. During that time he also went through a divorce.
In 2003 the poker pro in him resurfaced and Corkins was spotted at the 2003 WPT World Poker Finals where he took down the title and walked away with the first place prize of $1,089,200, which was a record win at that time. Soon after, he finished second to Gus Hansen in the 2004 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure earning him another $290,065. That same year, Corkins made the final table at the United States Poker Championship main event at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, N.J.
During the next few years Corkins went on to accomplish many more live tournament successes including 2nd place in the 2005, WSOP Tournament of Champions freeroll, a win at the 2007 WSOP $2,500 Six Handed No Limit Hold’em event and 22 separate money finishes at the World Series of Poker combined.
Hoyt Corkins is a true modern cowboy as he is seen playing in live tournaments in full Alabama Cowboy attire complete with a black hat, shirt, blue jeans and cowboy boots. While at the tables he likes to intimidate his opponents with a loose aggressive play style and apparently it works pretty well. Despite his aggressive, fast-paced play style, Corkins has been acknowledged by fellow players as a “laid back, soft spoken and humble” person.
Corkins is currently single and living the good life in Las Vegas, Nevada.
