Ivan Demidov shocked everyone, including himself, when he was one of the last 9 standing in 2008’s WSOP. Backing up a bit, Demidov was born in Moscow, Russia. He gained experience and money playing poker online, which he still favors doing to this day. In 2006 he got 5th place in a Pot-Limit Omaha event at the Russian Poker Championships. A year later he went to the Doyle Bruson Five Diamond World Poker Classic in Vegas and placed 3rd, winning $21,710 in the NLHE tournament. Before appearing in the 2008 WSOP he had competed in just three tournaments. When a found himself among the “November Nine,” he compared it to winning the lottery.
