Marcel Luske is an unforgettable poker player with some very unique trademarks. For one, he wears his sunglasses up-side down and loves to sing. Marcel’s father was both a butcher and a boxer and named his son after the French pugilist, Marcel Sardain. Luske lived in Holland as a child and had dreams of one day becoming a singer. That eventually came true as he released an album featuring “the poker song” in 2006.
When he grew up, Luske began working for his country’s government is customs but moved on quickly working in a nightclub. From there, he opened up a card club in Antwerp, Belgium where he regularly played Five-Card Stud when he wasn’t working.
After playing in a $1,000 buy-in tournament in Prague and winning $40,000, he decided to fly from place to place playing poker. That is how he received the name “The Flying Dutchman”. In 1999 he became a full time poker player and in January 2001, he won the Prague Poker Open. The following month he won three events in three days at the Euro Finals of Poker. In March he did it again with a British Poker Open title. By then end of 2001 he had earned himself the number 1 ranked spot out of European players and the following year was named the 2002 player of the year.
He went on to cash in many tournaments including the Five Star World Poker Classics in Vegas, The Hall of Fame Poker Classic in Paris, The Crown Australian Poker Championship in Melbourne, the Master Classics of Poker in Amsterdam and the Barcelona Open in Spain. He cashed two times in the 2002 WSOP and in 2003 played alongside Moneymaker finishing in 14th place out of 839 entrants. He won $65,000 in the event and made it on camera.
In 2004 he revisited the WSOP and finished in 10th place for the main event and in second place for the Seven Card Stud event. He took home his biggest single win at the time of $373,000. Luske is well loved by poker fans for his humor and his classy style as well as for his kindness. He has been called “Poker’s Roving Ambassador” for his promotion of goodwill to poker players. His cheerful demeanor has earned him appearances on TV shows and special events.
He is the founder of the World Poker Federation Advisory Board which promotes values for poker players and strives to set a standard of poker rules and etiquette. His goals are to unite the global community of poker. Marcel’s good nature and extreme talent for the game of poker has earned him a reputation of being one of poker’s most loved players.
