Name: Mike "The Mouth" Matusow
Winnings to Date: $7,422,170Mike Matusow was born in Los Angeles, California in April of 1968. As a child, Matusow was never afraid of voicing his opinions, which led to his nickname – The Mouth. He dabbled with many different interests while growing up and no matter what he was doing, there was always one theme – he craved competition. In the early 1990’s, Matusow discovered poker. He had previously played video poker while working as a dealer at a local casino. Although he loved the game, he wasn’t winning much, so he used his time at the table to study the players and their varying techniques. As soon as his game started to improve he entered a small local tournament, which he quickly won.
That win was all Matusow needed. He became a regular in small tournaments around town, boosting his bankroll considerably. He decided o move up the ladder and began playing in cash games, specializing in Omaha 8/Better. In 1997, Matusow entered his first WSOP tournament playing Omaha 8/Better and finished second. Two years later he won his first WSOP bracelet playing the $3,500 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em tournament. In 2001, Matusow made his first appearance at the WSOP Main Event final table where he finished sixth. A year later he won his second WSOP bracelet while playing the $5,000 buy-in Omaha 8/Better tournament.
With his success came constant partying and bad decisions. In late 2004, Matusow was sentenced to six months in the Clark County jail on a drug charge. Upon being released, he sobered up and vowed to become a better player. Just three months after his release, Matusow became the second person to ever reach the WSOP Main Event final table twice in a starting field of 600 or more players. He won $1 million for his 9th place finish.
Inspired by his victory, he scored the biggest gain of his career a few months later when he out-played and naturally out-talked a field of 110 of the world’s best players to win the 2005 Tournament of Champions and another $1 million.
Inspired by his performance, and wanting to prove that there's more to his game than just his mouth, Mike scored the biggest victory of his career a few months later when he out-played- and often out-talked - a field of 110 of the world's best players to win the 2005 Tournament of Champions and another $1 Million.
To this day, he continues to play, win, and, of course, talk.
