Winnings to Date: $3,876,372Mike Sexton has been in the poker business for over 20 years, first as a professional poker player and then as a host for the World Poker Tour on the travel channel. Mike was born in Shelby, Indiana on September 22, 1947. He was a gymnast in his early years and earned a degree in public recreation from Ohio State University. While in college, he played poker often and jokes that he majored in poker.
In 1970, he joined the Army as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. He was never deployed but he enjoyed his time serving his country. He taught ballroom dancing and was a salesman while in the army and continued to do so after he finished his two year enlistment. He began to fantasize about making a living as a poker player and decided to go pro in 1977.
Sexton played in and cashed in many tournaments, but his coaching of a Little League baseball team made it impossible for him to play at the World Series of Poker. Mike moved to Nevada in 1985 where he integrated himself further into the world of poker. He went on to win several tournaments which include one WSOP bracelet in 1989 and a total of $3,700,000 in winnings. He has cashed in 45 other WSOP events.
Although Mike is known for being an avid poker player, he is even better known as the main host of the World Poker Tour and PartyPoker.com spokesman. He founded a Tournament of Champions Poker tournament in which only winners from the previous year were allowed to compete. Some call Mike the “ambassador of poker” because of his hard work and love of the game.
One of his most recent accomplishments is the creation of PokerGives.org, a nonprofit organization that allows poker players an alternative way to play and give to charity. The organization was founded by Mike along with Linda Johnson, Jan Fisher and Lisa Tenner. When Mike is not busy promoting poker, he enjoys dance, watching movies and golf.
